With both her B.A. and M.A. from SUNY Geneseo, Barbara is a very strong supporter of higher education, especially SUNY. For her work in advocating for SUNY, she received the Friend of SUNY Award in 2012.
For her work in advocating for SUNY, she received the Friend of SUNY Award in 2012. She has always fought for more state funding for SUNY, concerned that the state has cut its funding from a high of 75% of the total SUNY budget in the 1970’s to an inadequate 37% today. She believes the associated tuition increases are making a college education either completely unaffordable for many young people and their families or leaving them in dangerously-high debt after graduation. She is also concerned about other negative impacts from cuts to SUNY, including an overreliance on adjunct faculty and a reduction in classes offered, making it more difficult for students to graduate in four years.
Barbara will continue to champion not only public but also private colleges and universities, as she regards all as vital bulwarks of our society, cultivating critical thinking, broadening horizons, and providing access to opportunities.
